Marianne, desperate and infatuated, abides by this code of secrecy. The brutal, filthy living conditions and lack of decent food or medical care were exacerbated by repressive policies and violent treatment meted out by the private Australian security firms contracted to run the prisons. The film's themes are basic and universal, and by working them into a film that's anything but yields a rather unique and even intoxicating flavor that would be absent in a more conventional picture where it might seem the themes are merely recycled in a frame of general Western workings. The titular duel pits hard-bitten gunslinger Clayton Lee Van Cleef against the equally gritty Saxon Horst Frank. The villains are well-cast: spaghetti western regular Frank plays both the patriarch and his oldest son, a cunning, knowing man with political ambitions, who bides his time; French actor Mazza best known for a small part in is the middle son, a simple and impatient man of action, and Austrian actor Grünberg steals the show as the youngest son, a homosexual maniac who kills an entire community of Dutch immigrants just for fun, in a scene so over the top it will leave you cringing. Connell is a nice boy, especially in Marianne's eye: Silent, thoughtful, intelligent, generous.

Keoma embraces something of an oddball style, runs with it, and succeeds in allowing music to define the film and slow-motion photography to shape the action.
At the same time though, the album, filled with songs that weave together elements of folk, country, rock, gospel, and pop, was sinking deep into my musical heart and soul, where I think it has found a permanent space. Other times, there's an almost slapstick quality to the action, as characters scramble to avoid confronting their past selves. Most sound effects follow suit, whether footsteps on wooden floors or gun shots that offer up a basic thud and punch but little more. There is relatively little filler here, but after all the excitement it almost feels like we need some periods of less consequence and concentration in order to gather ourselves for the home turn. Yet the prison system deployed to crush the bodies and spirits of refugees is unique in its own ways as well.
